NEW SCHOOL NURSE MENTOR PROGRAM
PURPOSE: To provide support, encouragement and information to new schol nurses.
DEFINTION: A "new school nurse" is any licensed registered nurse practicing school nursing in the State of Wisconsin for the first time.
WHO MAY BE A MENTOR? A practicing school nurse who has practiced in the school setting for at least 2 years and has an interest in helping a fellow nurse get off to a successful start. DPI certification in school nursing is preferred.
ROLE OF THE MENTOR: To act as a resource for the school nurse by:
- Providing information about state and national school nurse organizations and encourage involvement in these organizations. Invite the new nurse to district and state meetings.
- Giving the "New School Nurse Welcome Packet" to the new school nurse.
- Making phone or personal contact on a monthly basis.
- Helping the new nurse network with other school nurses in the area.
- Providing any other technical or emotional support deemed necessary.
HOW THE PROCESS WILL WORK:
- A pool of volunteer School Nurse Mentors will be established in each WASN district..
- Names of new school nurses will be given to area WASN District board members by the WASN membership chair, DPI school nurse consultant, school administrators, other school nurses or self-referral.
- New nurses will then be matched with mentor volunteers by the district representatives.
- Each member of the mentor team will receive their mentor team partner's name by mail.
- Each new school nurse will receive a "New School Nurse Welcome Packet".
- The mentor will continue regular contact with the new nurse for at least one full school year.
