Dear WASN members,
This has certainly been a historic year for public education in Wisconsin. The impact of the budget cuts on school nursing isn’t fully understood as yet but WASN will continue to work for the health of Wisconsin’s children and advocate for school nursing.

This year’s Spring Conference was a huge success! Kudos to Louise Wilson, Beaver Dam and her planning committee on a job well done. 200 School nurses attended the conference. Next year the conference will be hosted in Stevens Point on April 25, 26 and 27, 2012.

Several people are leaving the WASN Board – our thanks to Holly Bauer, Manawa/Wegafremont serving as Secretary for 2 terms, Marcia Creasey River Valley, District 4 CESA 3 director who is retiring, Rose Dolatowski, Burlington Area SD who is switching from District 6 director to NASN representative, and Kathleen Murphy, Milwaukee Public Schools, leaving as our current NASN representative.

Staying on to help are Connie Troyanek, West Salem, Treasurer, Paulette Divall, Riverdale and Mary K. Logemann, Platteville, Membership co‐chairs, Sandy Korish, Holmen District 4/CESA 4 Director, Mary Lyke, Ripon District 5 Director, and Nancy Smith, Superior Co‐director for District 1 with Trisha Neuser, Rice Lake helping out. Thank you.

Welcome to the new Board members, Sue Mathews, Milwaukee Public Schools as WASN secretary, Ann Jenkins, Dodgeville as District 4 /CESA3 director, JoAnn Zaumseil, North Lake as District 2 director, and Twyla Lato, Waukesha and Sally Roepe, Wauwatosa as District 6 co‐directors and Michelle Kaczarowski, Clintonville as Nominations Chair.

Our best wishes to some of WASN’s members who have been tireless advocate for children and who are retiring this year: Marcia Creasey from River Valley, Nancy Smith from Superior, Rita Simon from Shawano, Donna McGinley from Mauston, Lynda Narish‐Johnson from LaCrosse, Kathy Ross from Lancaster, Barb Jaderborg from Spooner, Pat Thompson from Sauk City, and Janice Rambo from Watertown. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy – you have earned it.

Congratulations are in order to Twyla Lato, 2011 WASN School Nurse of the Year and RaeMalee McMahon, 2011 WASN School Nurse Administrator of the Year. Both of these wonderful school nurses are invited to apply for the NASN honors.

Lastly, on April 6, 2011 members of the WASN Board of Directors and other interested school nurses testified at the State Senate Public Hearing on Senate Bill 45. Here is the link so you can read the entire bill http://legis.wisconsin.gov/2011/data/SB‐45.pdf Whereas the leadership of WASN feels that the current Law 160 may be in need of tweaking, SB 45 goes way too far and some of the provisions appear to conflict with the Nurse Practice Act. Please read SB 45 and contact your state senator about your concerns.

WASN provided the Wisconsin State Senate Health Committee, (composed of Senator Dr. Pam Galloway of Wausau, Senator Terry Moulton of Chippewa Falls, Senator Tim Carpenter of Milwaukee, Senator John Erpenbach of Middleton, and chaired by Senator Leah Vukmir from Wauwatosa/Brookfield) with suggested revisions of the medication law Act 160.

The WASN Legislative Committee and Jack O’Meara, WASN Lobbyist are watching this situation closely and will continue to keep us informed. Stay tuned to WASN news on our Facebook page and website. Ann Riojas, WASN President3
