P R E S I D E N T S M E S S A G E Welcome WASN members to 2010 - a new decade of school nursing and our updated website! We are still working to improve the access and information provided and you will see additions during the next few months. A big thank you to Joan Simpson, for all of her work as the past president of WASN. Joan is recovering from surgery and beginning her treatment for breast cancer and we will keep her in our thoughts and prayers. As exhausting as the H1N1 outbreak has been, it has richly demonstrated the value of a school nurse to a school or school district. Kudos to Rachel Gallagher, DPI School Nurse Consultant for her efforts to keep everyone informed and on target, it was much appreciated. Note the new website link to DPI. A big thank you to the Legislative Committee ( Kathy Brockman, Twyla Lato, Linda Caldart-Olson, Holly Bauer, and Jack O'Meara, WASN Lobbyist) for staying on top of the proposed changes to the "medication administration in schools" legislation and other legislation impacting children. This is a committee on a mission! Beginning January 2010, WASN will be encouraging school district to nominate their school nurse for the WASN School Nurse of the Year Award. Nomination papers are mailed to every school district, distributed at the Wisconsin Assn. of School Boards Convention and available for download from the WASN website. The winner will be announced at the WASN Spring Conference. If you have a WASN question or request, please email me at riojasak@milwaukee.k12.wi.us May your spring semester be without H1N1 or lice:-) Ann Riojas Acting President ![]() |
